GTA VI, which was initially expected to be released later in 2025, has now been officially delayed to May 26, 2026. The game is currently being developed for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles, with a PC version coming later.
In a brief press release, Rockstar Games thanked fans for their support and promised that the extra development time would be worth it:
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
After GTA V sold over 210 million copies since its release back in 2013, GTA VI was probably the most anticipated game of 2025. Its new May 2026 release date will give more room for other blockbuster games coming in the fall season, such as Borderlands 4, which just had its release date moved up from September 23 to September 12, 2025. Microsoft and Activision have also yet to reveal to successor to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
