Blizzard announced yesterday that it will no longer release new content for Warcraft Rumble, its free-to-play mobile game that launched back in 2023. The developer wasn’t spared by the approximately 9,000 job cuts Microsoft announced yesterday, but it will continue to support the game with in-game events and bug fixes.
“Since launch, Rumble has struggled to find its footing relative to our ambition for its long-term success, and for some time now the team has been listening to player feedback, refocusing in certain areas, and exploring different options. Some of that work showed signs of progress, but ultimately wasn’t enough to put the game on a path to sustainability,” the company explained in the announcement.
You may remember that one of the reasons Microsoft wanted to acquire Activision Blizzard King was to increase its presence on the mobile games market. However, Activision announced in May that it was pulling the plug on Call of Duty: Warzone mobile. We also learned yesterday that Candy Crush developer King has been affected by this latest round of layoffs. Lastly, the ambitious mobile game store that Microsoft planned to launch back in July 2024 is still nowhere to be seen.
Blizzard ending content updates for Warcraft Rumble isn’t as bad as Microsoft cancelling Rare’s Everwild game and the Perfect Dark reboot developed by The Initiative. That studio is actually being shut down as part of the job cuts. Blackbird, a new MMORPG project from Zenimax Online Studios has also reportedly been canceled.
