Starfield Will Soon Get a Patch to Fix Crashing Issues on PlayStation 5

The previously Xbox console-exclusive game Starfield finally arrived on PlayStation 5 on April 7, but it wasn’t exactly a smooth landing. Since its launch, many PS5 gamers have been complaining about regular freezes and crashing issues, and this is something the experts at Digital Foundry also pointed out in their technical review of the game’s PS5 and PS5 Pro versions.

“Unfortunately, both PS5 and PS5 Pro crashed somewhat regularly during testing, a phenomenon that didn’t affect the Xbox Series release on launch. When crashing, the game locks up and becomes unresponsive, requiring a forced restart at the system level. We observed this behaviour across multiple modes and configurations, so there’s no obvious suggestion on how to avoid these issues,” Digital Foundry explained last week.

As many PS5 players seemingly started asking for refunds, Bethesda has finally acknowledged the technical problems and promised to fix them very soon. “We’re aware of some reported PS5 crashing issues and have narrowed them down to a small number of causes. We’re addressing these in a hotfix we’re aiming to release this week,” the company posted on X yesterday.

The launch of Starfield on PS5 coincided with the release of a Free Lanes update that brought various improvements to exploration, customization, combat, and more on all platforms, as well as a new Terran Armada story DLC. Unfortunately, Digital Foundry also pointed out that the Xbox Series X version of Starfield also “regressed technically” following the release of the Free Lanes update, with “no crashes to speak of but new stutters in the opening sequence and other demanding scenes.” It’s not clear if Bethesda is aware of these new Xbox issues, however.
