Citing weaker than expected U.S. sales, Nintendo has cut quarterly Switch 2 production by 33 percent. The firm had originally expected to produce 6 million units this quarter, but it will now make 4 million units.
That’s according to a report in Bloomberg, which also notes that the cuts could continue into April.
The Switch 2 got off to a fast start, and Nintendo reported in February that it had sold 17 million units since the console’s launch in June 2025. But there were always questions about how the Switch 2 would ever live up to the success of its predecessor, especially since the component shortages that started last year triggered price increases.
I never expected the Switch 2 to outsell the OG Switch, but I also never saw Nintendo cutting production less than a year into the new device’s life. Fortunately, Nintendo still expects to hit its original sales goal of 19 million units for its fiscal year, which ends with March. But the future is now in question.
Nintendo remains “confident” in the long-term success of the Switch 2, according to sources quoted by Bloomberg.
