Sony Reveals The Design of Its PlayStation VR2 Headset

Sony has just taken the wraps of its PlayStation VR2 headset, which is the successor to the original PS VR system released during the previous console generation. If the design of Sony’s PlayStation 5 received a polarized reception back in 2020, the company says that it wanted its PS VR2 headset to look coherent next to the console.

“When our design team created the PS5 console, they also had the next generation VR headset in mind so you’ll notice some similarities in the look and feel. The PS5 console has flat edges as it is meant to be displayed on a flat surface, while there was more emphasis on adding roundness to the design of PS VR2 headset since it is meant to have constant human contact, similar to the rounded edges of the DualSense controller and Pulse 3D headset,” explained Hideaki Nishino
Senior Vice President, Platform Experience.

The PS VR2 headset uses what Sony calls a circular “orb” look that matches the design of the PS VR2 Sense controllers. The company emphasized users coming from the original PS VR should feel a sense of familiarity, with the PS VR2 featuring an adjustable headband just like the original PS VR did. “Other features such as the headset’s adjustable scope that places the scope area closer or further away from the face and placement of the stereo headphone jack also remain the same, so players will be familiar with it, wrote Nishino.

Some notable design changes compared to the original PS VR includes a lens adjustment dial, a new vent design, as well as a built-in motor for headset feedback. Sony claims that it still managed to create a smaller and lighter headset, which will only require a single cord connection to a PlayStation 5 console.

The PlayStation VR2 still has no release date, but it’s expected to deliver a true leap forward for VR experiences on consoles. The headset will support 4K HDR via two OLED displays with a 110-degree field of view and of 2000 × 2040 resolution per eye, with a refresh rate of 90 or 120 Hz. Sony’s original PS VR had sold over 5 million units as of January 2020, and it will be interesting to see if the PS VR2 can bring VR experiences to a bigger audience during this new console generation.
