Microsoft’s AMD-based Surface Laptop 4 Gets New Firmware Updates

Microsoft has started rolling out the March 2022 firmware updates for its AMD-based Surface Laptop 4 (via Neowin). The new bits should improve graphics stability and performance, and there’s also a Surface Dock 2 firmware update to improve support for the accessory.

If you’re running Windows 11 on your AMD-based Surface Laptop, Microsoft said in the release notes that there’s a new feature in this month’s updates to improve battery life, though the company didn’t go into details. The company mentioned a similar improvement in the March firmware updates for the AMD-based Surface Laptop 3 last week.

The Surface Laptop 4 will turn a year old next month, and it was the second device in the Surface Laptop family to be available with both Intel and AMD processors. Unlike with the Surface Laptop 3, though the AMD Ryzen CPUs are available on both the 13.5 and 15” versions of the Surface Laptop 4.

In addition to the Surface Laptop 4, Microsoft has also released new firmware updates for its 2018 Surface Studio 2. Microsoft says that these updates address critical security vulnerabilities and improve system stability for the all-in-one PC.

Firmware updates for Surface devices usually start rolling out in waves, so you may have to wait before this month’s update show up in Windows Update. When you install the latest update, you’ll also get all previous firmware updates for your Surface device if you didn’t install them before.

I also hope that MS soon pushes further battery improvements for the intel based Surface Laptop 4s with Win11. I have the top-of the line version (new, ca 4months old) and never get more than 6-8h battery, with reduced screen brightness. That’s not practicable in 2022
