Netflix Confirms it Won’t Have an App for the Apple Vision Pro

Apple Vision Pro

Apple detailed earlier this week the list of entertainment apps that will be available on its Vision Pro headset at launch, and Netflix was surprisingly missing. Other big streaming platforms such as Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Discovery+, and Max will all be there, so why doesn’t Netflix want to be on the Vision Pro App Store as well?

According to Bloomberg, Netflix has declined to build an app for the Vision Pro. Worse, the company also won’t allow early adopters to watch content using its iPad app. “Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs,” Netflix said in the statement shared with Bloomberg.

As a reminder, Apple’s headset will be able to run all iPad apps, which is good for companies that may not have the resources to create a native app for the Vision Pro. Of course, that doesn’t apply to a company with huge resources like Netflix. However, the streaming service may still not want to have an app on a platform that will likely have a very small user base for quite some time. The Apple Vision Pro is priced at $3,499, and only die-hard Apple fans may really want to buy one right now.

Still, Netflix forcing early Vision Pro adopters to use a web browser to access its service while the iPad app could work just fine is… not very user-friendly. And as Bloomberg pointed out, Netflix actually said back in July that its iPad app would be supported on the Vision Pro. The streaming service even released an app for Meta Quest headsets, so that makes the Apple Vision Pro situation even more strange.

In the past, Netflix has not always been great at supporting Apple’s different platforms. As an example, the Netflix app on tvOS only got support for the Netflix with ads plan in March 2023, four months after it launched on other platforms. Netflix is also one of the rare streaming services that doesn’t integrate with the Watch Now/Search features of the Apple TV app. Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that the company is reluctant to the Apple Vision Pro headset after all.
