Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” is Now Available

Linux Mint 22

Linux Mint has released the next major long-term support version of its popular Linux distribution for desktop PCs.

“Linux Mint 22 is a long-term support release which will be supported until 2029,” the announcement post explains. “It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use.”

Linux Mint 22 arrives almost exactly one year after Linux Mint 21, a long-term support release that is also being supported for five years. As before, it’s available in three core editions, each of which serves specific needs. Cinnamon Edition is the mainstream version, while MATE Edition provides a classic desktop experience and uses fewer system resources, and Xfce Edition provides a stable, lightweight desktop environment that offers fewer features.

Linux Mint 22 is based on the Linux 6.8 kernel and Ubuntu 24.04. New features in this release include improved language support with better localization and less disk space usage, all the modern hardware support provided by its Ubuntu package base, GTK4-compatible themes, a packaged version of the Thunderbird email client, a new GNOME Online Accounts app that works with all three of the core editions, improved performance and security in the Software Manager app, a Matrix chat app, and, in the Cinnamon Edition, various improvements to the Nemo editor for customizing the file management app.

Linux Mint 22 also delivers a long list of improvements to Sticky (a note-taking app), Xed (a text editor), Timeshift (snapshots), Firefox, GIMP, and more. You can learn more on the Linux Mint 22 New Features page.

You can find download links for the installation ISO in the original announcement post or directly from the Linux Mint website. If you are running the Linux Mint 22 beta, you can upgrade to the stable version using the Update Manager app. Those on Linux Mint 21.3, which was released this past January, will get upgrade instructions soon.
