Microsoft Unveils New Surface Pro, 12-inch and Surface Laptop, 13-inch Copilot+ PCs

Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft has just unveiled two new Surface Copilot+ PCs this morning, the Qualcomm-powered Surface Pro, 12-inch and Surface Laptop, 13-inch. The two new devices are powered by last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus chip with 8 CPU cores, and they will complement the flagship Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 Copilot+ PCs that Microsoft announced in May 2024.

Overall, these two new Qualcomm-powered Surface devices are about making Copilot+ PC features available at lower price points. Indeed, the Surface Pro, 12-inch starts at $799, and the Surface Laptop, 13-inch will be $100 more expensive at $899. Both devices will be available starting May 20 in select markets, with Business versions to follow on July 22.

“Featuring long-lasting battery life, a lightweight design, beautiful new colors, and AI- powered experiences, the all-new Surface Copilot+ PCs are the ideal Windows 11 devices for those with an on-the-go lifestyle—at a great value. With Windows 10 reaching the end of support on Oct. 14, 2025, the Surface Pro, 12-inch, and Surface Laptop, 13-inch are great options to ensure you have a modern, secure, and efficient computing experience,” wrote Brett Ostrum, Corporate Vice President, Surface.

Surface Pro, 12-inch

According to Microsoft, the new 12-inch Surface Pro is “the thinnest and lightest Copilot+ PC yet.” The tablet is just 0.30 inches (7.8 mm) thin and weighs 1.5 lbs (686 grams), and it appears to be fanless.

Compared to the 13-inch Surface Pro 11, the smaller tablet still has an adjustable kickstand and detachable keyboard. However, the latter, which is still an optional accessory, can only lie flat on a table. It is backlit and can fold back completely flat against the tablet, which can be handy when writing or sketching.

The optional Surface Pen for the new tablet also magnetically attaches to the back of the tablet for charging and storage. Please note that Microsoft no longer includes a charger in the box, but a USB-C charging cable is still there. The new tablet also dropped Microsoft’s proprietary Surface Connect port and can be charged using one of its two USB-C ports instead.

Surface Pro 12-inch

This new Surface Pro tablet comes with a 12-inch LCD display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, a 2196 x 1464 resolution, and an up to 90Hz refresh rate. The tablet also features 16GB of RAM, 256GB or 512GB of SSD storage, a 1080p Full HD front-facing Surface Studio Camera with support for Windows Hello and Windows Studio Effects, and a 10MP Ultra HD rear-facing camera. On the network and connectivity front, the tablet also supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 standards.

This Qualcomm-powered Surface Pro, 12-inch ships with Windows 11 Home, and Microsoft promises up to 16 hours of local video playback and up to 12 hours of active web usage. The tablet also supports fast charging with a minimum 45W charger via USB-C.

Surface Laptop, 13-inch

The new Surface Laptop, 13-inch is also Microsoft’s thinnest and lightest laptop yet, being 0.61 inch (15.6mm thin) and weighing just 2.7 lbs (1.22 kg). It features an anodized aluminum chassis available in Ocean, Violet, and Platinum colors, just like the new Surface Pro.

The 13-inch screen on this new laptop still has a 3:2 aspect ratio, but its resolution dropped to 1920×1280 with a 60 Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, there’s the same 8-core Snapdragon X Plus chip with a 45 TOPS NPU, 16GB of RAM, and either 256GB or 512GB of memory.

Just like the new Surface Pro, the Surface Laptop, 13-inch dropped its proprietary Surface Connect port and will require using one of its 2 USB-C ports for charging (the Surface 45W USB-C Wall Charger is included in the box, however). There’s also one USB-A 3.1 port, one headphone jack, and Microsoft promises up to 23 hours of local video playback and up to 16 hours of active web usage, “the longest battery life of any Surface.”

Surface Laptop, 13-inch

The new Surface Laptop also comes with a full HD front-facing Surface Studio Camera with support for Windows Studio Effects, dual Studio Mics with enhanced voice focus, and Omnisonic speakers with Dolby Audio. Microsoft also included a fingerprint reader into the power button for Windows Hello authentication (the Surface Pro supports Windows Hello face authentication).

Microsoft says that its new Surface Laptop is “50% faster than Surface Laptop 5 and even outpaces the MacBook Air M3.” That remains to be seen, considering that its Snapdragon X Plus chip isn’t Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line silicon for Copilot+ PCs. However, both the new Surface Laptop, 13-inch and Surface Pro, 12-inch will support new Copilot+ PCs features, including Recall, Click to Do, the AI-powered Windows Search, and other AI experiences in third-party apps.

Microsoft’s new Surface Copilot+ PCs are available to pre-order today and will start shipping on May 20. The business versions coming to select markets on July 22 will feature Windows 11 Pro, anti-reflective displays, an NFC Reader on the Surface Pro, 12-inch, and additional security and management features.
