Epic Games announced today that it has resubmitted Fortnite to the US App Store. It’s now up to Apple to review the app and ultimately allow it on its digital storefront, and this should be resolved in a couple of days unless there’s some unexpected twist.
It’s been almost five years since Apple removed Fortnite from its App Store because Epic Games implemented its own in-app payment system in the game to bypass Apple’s 30% cut on in-app payments. Following a long legal battle between the two companies, the situation is much different today as a ruling from a US federal judge tore down Apple’s walled garden in the country. To comply with the US court decision, Apple published new App Store guidelines allowing developers to offer external payment methods in their apps and tell their users about promotional offers. Apple can also no longer take a 27% cut on external payments coming from in-app links.

While Apple previously said that it would comply with the court’s order, the company asked a judge on Wednesday to pause the App Store rule changes in the US, claiming that they were causing “grave irreparable harm” to the company. In the meantime, the company did approve a Spotify app update with support for external payment options.
Before Epic Games could hope to see Fortnite coming back to the App Store, the company had made the game available via its new Epic Games Store for iOS and iPadOS, but only in the EU. Apple allowed alternative App Stores in the EU to comply with the Digital Markets Act, and it’s not clear yet if the company could eventually be forced to do the same in other parts of the world.
