Samsung Takes on OnePlus with Galaxy S20 FE

Samsung today unveiled the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE), which brings the best of its Galaxy flagships at more affordable prices. It starts at $699, putting the handset squarely in the sights of OnePlus, which had typically offered the best value in this part of the market.

“We are constantly speaking to our fans and taking feedback, and we heard what they loved the most about our Galaxy S20 series, what features they used most often and what they would want to see in a new smartphone,” Samsung Electronics president Dr. TM Roh said in a prepared statement. “The S20 FE is an extension of the Galaxy S20 family and is the start of a new way to bring meaningful innovation to even more people to let them do the things they love with the best of Galaxy.”

The Galaxy S20 FE does look like a great value, too: It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 6 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of expandable storage, and it provides an HDR10+ certified, 6.5-inch flat Full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O Display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 at 407ppi and a 120 Hz refresh rate. There’s even a triple-lens rear camera system, albeit one that doesn’t quite match the S20 Ultra/Note 20 Ultra, with a 12 MP wide-angle main lens, a 12 MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom capabilities. And it supports 5G networking.

The S20 FE is also offered in some fun colors thanks to its plastic body: Cloud Red, Cloud Orange, Cloud Lavender, Cloud Mint, Cloud Navy, and Cloud White.

You can preorder the handset now from Samsung.com, and it should become available on October 1.

<p>Interesting that Galaxy FE 5G now got the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor even in Europe. So thats a huge step forward. But at the same time I wonder who will buy the ”older” SE 20 models in EU that got Exynos?</p><p><br></p><p>A tricky strategy for Samsung. </p><p><br></p>

<p>At the preorder price of $599 from many retailers right now, this is a great buy. Definitely better value than the smaller S20 and Note 20 and the A71 5G. It also will put a lot of pressure on One Plus. There aren't too many 865 flagship phones in this price range in the US other than the lowest spec'd one plus 8 model. most phones in this range have a 765G including Google's upcoming pixel 5. </p>

<p>Two thumbs up for plastic. Now if we can get the flagship phones back into plastic too… </p>

<p>How about a Galaxy S20 SE (<u>Smaller Edition</u>) for those who don't want to carry a floor tile around all of the time.</p>

<p>And it has wireless charging. Something OnePlus refuses to put in all but its most expensive handsets. And fun colors!</p>
