Spotify Lets Free Users Stream Music on Speakers

Spotify’s Connect experience is a really good feature that’s getting a massive upgrade if you are not a paying subscriber. The music streaming service announced on Wednesday that it’s enabling the feature for everyone — even free users.

Spotify Connect now lets users in certain markets stream music from Spotify on their smart speakers, including Sonos, Bose, and Amazon Echo speakers.

The feature is first launching for Spotify’s free users in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. Everyone else will be able to use their Sonos speakers to connect directly from the Spotify app and play music on their speakers from there. The experience works for those with Bose smart speakers and soundbars as well.

“Incorporating Spotify into these devices is all part of our goal to create a truly frictionless experience for our users. Play from your phone, transition to your smart speaker, back to the phone, over to the car—with just a tap or the sound of your voice,” the company said. It’s interesting to see Spotify enabling such a big feature for free users, but I guess it could entice more customers into getting a premium subscription for the full experience.
