Netflix’s Ad-Supported Plan Starts Rolling Out in 12 Countries

Netflix has started rolling out its new Basic with Ads plan in 12 markets. The new ad-supported is now live in the US where it’s priced at $6.99/month, but it’s also launching in Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain.

Netflix’s new ad-supported tier will have an average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour, and this may vary based on the type of content you’re watching. Ads will be 15 or 30 seconds in length, and Netflix has teamed up with Microsoft to offer targeting capabilities by country and genre. Netflix will use your date of birth, gender, and location information to provide ads tailored to your profile.

As of today, Netflix with Ads lets subscribers view content in 720p quality, but some movies and TV shows are not available yet due to licensing restrictions. Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix was still in discussions with studios to get their content on this new tier and the permission to run ads on it.

If Netflix Basic with ads only lets you watch content on one device at a time, you can still create different profiles for other family members. Notably, ads won’t be shown on Kids profiles. Netflix games are also accessible with this plan on iOS and Android without any ads.

Netflix remains one of the most expensive streaming services on the market, and it still restricts 4K quality and HDR to the $19.99 Premium plan. “We’re confident that with Netflix starting at $6.99 a month, we now have a price and plan for every fan,” Netflix’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer Greg Peters said last month.

If Netflix launched its ad-supported plan just six months after announcing it, Disney+ will soon follow suit with a $7.99 ad-supported plan launching on December 8. On this date, the current Disney+ ad-free plan will also get more expensive at $10.99/month.
