Google Play Movies & TV Brand to Disappear in January

Google is about the retire its last remaining Google Play Movies & TV apps in January. In a recently published support document (via 9to5Google), the company announced that Google Play Movies & TV will disappear from Android TV devices and the Google Play website starting on January 17, 2024.
Google said that it’s making these changes “to simplify how you purchase new movies or access the movies and TV shows you’ve purchased through Google. Since the company launched its new Google TV platform back in 2020, the writing has been on the wall for the Play Movies & TV brand.

On Android, the existing Google Play Movies & TV app was rebranded to “Google TV” back in 2020. This is now where users can purchase films and TV shows from Google as this content has now been removed from the Play Store. Google also shut down the Play Movies & TV apps on LG, Samsung, and Vizio Smart TVs in 2021, and the iOS app was also rebranded to Google TV a year later.
While Google Play Movies & TV will soon disappear from Android TV devices and the web, users will still be able to access all of their previously purchased titles. On smart TVs and streaming devices powered by Android TV, this content will be available via the “Shop” tab. On Android TV cable boxes and set top boxes, this content will be available via the YouTube app. On the web, all purchased content is already accessible via YouTube as well.
