Spotify has started testing new AI playlists that let users create a musical mix based on a text prompt. By using a prompt such as “energetic music from the 80’s to wake me up,” users will be able to create playlists with music from specific genres, artists, decades, and other criteria.
“Whether you’re a beginner or an expert playlist creator, AI Playlist pairs our powerful personalization technology with AI to deliver that perfect musical mix, just for you,” the Spotify team explained today. “You can use prompts that reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, even emojis.”

As of today, these AI playlists are available for Premium users in the UK and Australia, and they can be only created in the Spotify mobile apps. Users will need to tap the “+” icon in their library, select “AI Playlist,” and then try a prompt or use one of the suggested ones.
AI Playlists are currently in beta, and Spotify has implemented safeguards to block offensive or non-music-related prompts. The results should also leverage the personalized recommendations that power features like the Discover Weekly playlist and the new AI DJ, which is also in beta in select markets.
The Spotify team said today that it will “continue to iterate and innovate on the experience.” While Spotify is definitely doing some interesting experiments with generative AI technology, this is all about bringing more value to its Premium subscription, which will reportedly soon get another price hike in the UK, Australia, and other markets.
