Apple is acquiring Pixelmator, a company known for its award-winning photo editing apps for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. The news was announced today by the Pixelmator team, which didn’t share financial details about the transaction.
Pixelmator was created in 2007 in Lithuania by two brothers, Saulius Dailide and Aidas Dailide. “We’ve been inspired by Apple since day one, crafting our products with the same razor-sharp focus on design, ease of use, and performance. And looking back, it’s crazy what a small group of dedicated people have been able to achieve over the years from all the way in Vilnius, Lithuania,” the team said today.
In addition to its paid Pixelmator app for iPhone and iPad, the company also offers free Photomator apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, plus Pixelmator Pro for macOS. While the acquisition is still pending approval from regulators, the team said that there will be no immediate changes to its apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
It’s an interesting acquisition for Apple, which just revamped its Photos app with the release of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 Sequoia. While Apple Photos does the job for light photo editing work, Pixelmator may well complete Apple’s other apps for creative professionals such as Final Cut and Logic Pro. “Now, we’ll have the ability to reach an even wider audience and make an even bigger impact on the lives of creative people around the world,” the Pixelmator team said today.
