Amazon is Shutting Down Freevee After Moving its Content to Prime Video

Amazon is shutting down Freevee, its ad-supported video streaming platform formerly known as IMDb TV. The service will shut down in the coming weeks, but all of its content is now available on Amazon Prime Video.

Freevee was the home of some popular shows such as Jury Duty, Bosch: Legacy, and American Rust: Broken Justice. The platform has been around since 2019 and and was rebranded a couple times, and it never enjoyed the same level of momentum as Amazon’s more popular Prime Video platform.

“To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding,” an Amazon spokesperson told Variety. “There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels – all available on Prime Video.”

With Amazon now showing ads to all Prime Video members unless they pay an extra $2.99/month, it probably didn’t make sense for the company to maintain a separate ad-supported video streaming platform. Unlike Freevee, Prime Video also offers movies and TV shows on-demand as well as various paid channels users can subscribe to.
