Spotify is Copying AI Chatbots With new “Talk to Spotify” Feature

Spotify is starting to roll out a new conversational experience in beta to users in select markets. Premium members aged 18 or older in the US, Ireland, and Sweden will see a new “Talk to Spotify” feature in the mobile app that will allow them to describe what they want to listen to, ask questions about the song, podcast, or audiobook they’re listening to, and more.

Spotify introduced various AI-powered features in recent months, including an AI playlist and an AI DJ, but this new chat experience is more similar to how mainstream AI chatbots work. And Spotify is integrating this “Talk to Spotify” feature right into the app’s Home tab and Now Playing view on mobile.

“By typing or speaking directly in the app, you can have a back-and-forth conversation to choose what’s playing, learn about the music you love, revisit your listening history, and go deeper on podcasts and audiobooks, all without leaving Spotify,” the team explained. “Because Spotify understands your playlists, favorite artists, repeat listens, and listening history, it can help answer questions about your taste.”

At the moment, this new conversational experience is only available in English, and it supports text and voice input. Just like other AI chatbots, the Spotify team warned that its AI can make mistakes, and that has to be expected for a beta feature.

Amazon is doing something similar with its next-gen Alexa+ assistant on Fire TV devices, which can help users find content to watch and more. As more users get used to interacting with AI chatbots to find what they want, it’s not surprising to see streaming services trying to adapt.
