Windows 11 Users Will Soon Receive 22H2 Update Automatically

Windows 11 PC with Start Menu

Microsoft has started pushing the latest version of Windows 11 (22H2) to users still running the original version of the OS (21H1). The company announced the automatic updates on its Windows Health Dashboard yesterday (via Neowin), and it’s a continuation of what Microsoft has been doing to keep Windows 10 users secure in recent years.

The automatic updates will only apply to non-managed Windows 11 PCs, and it will be a gradual rollout starting with “devices that have been using version 21H2 for the longest period of time.” Once Windows 11 22H2 is ready to be installed, users will still be able to choose the most convenient time to start the update process.

Windows 11 version 21H1, the original version of the OS released in the fall of 2021 will reach end of support for Home and Pro users on October 10, 2023. However, Windows 11 version 22H2 can already be installed from Windows Update on all PCs without any compatibility issues. As usual, Microsoft is using telemetry data to detect if some PCs may not provide the best experience after installing the latest Windows 11 update.

The main new features in Windows 11 version 22H2 include Snap Layouts improvements, Focus Sessions, the addition of Tabs in File Explorer, and a redesigned Taskbar overflow area. A recent update has also brought back access to Task Manager from the taskbar.

A year ago, Microsoft’s Chief Product Officer Panos Panay said that Windows users were upgrading to Windows 11 at “twice the rate” the company saw for Windows 10 and that Windows 11 had “the highest quality scores and product satisfaction of any version of Windows we’ve ever shipped.” According to Statcounter, the Windows version market share of Windows 11 grew from 2.6% in January 2022 to 16.97% in December 2022, which represents a quite significant 14.37 percentage points progression.
