More Windows 10 Users Can Now Try Microsoft’s Copilot AI Assistant

Copilot on Windows 10

Microsoft is starting to expand access to its Copilot assistant on Windows 10. The software giant first made its new AI assistant available to Windows 10 Insiders on the Release Preview Channel last week, but the feature is now included in an optional update for Windows 10 (KB5032278) that the company released yesterday.

While Microsoft’s Cortana assistant is now deprecated on Windows PCs, Copilot is bringing what should be a more useful ChatGPT-like conversational AI to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Copilot works as a Microsoft Edge window that opens on the right of the screen, and it’s designed as an everyday AI companion that can answer questions and help users create content and be more productive.

On Windows 10, Copilot appears as a button on the right side of the taskbar. Compared to Copilot on Windows 11, Microsoft previously said that its AI assistant is currently missing the ability to customize preferences and settings or open Windows applications.

The optional Windows 10 update that Microsoft released yesterday also adds the same “Get the latest updates as soon as they are available” toggle in Windows Update that’s already available on Windows 11 (on non-managed devices). You’ll need to turn on this toggle to get early access to Copilot on Windows 10.

Microsoft said yesterday that the AI assistant would only be available to a “small audience” initially before a broad deployment in the coming months. However, the public rollout of Copilot on Windows 10 should continue later this month with the December Patch Tuesday update for the OS.
