Microsoft Releases January 2024 Patch Tuesday Updates

Windows 11 PC with Start Menu

Microsoft has just released the January 2024 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft didn’t release optional “D” updates in the last week of December due to the holidays, and today’s updates only include bug fixes and security updates.

The KB5034123 update for Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2 includes a fix for an issue causing PCs to shut down after 60 seconds. Microsoft explained that this only occurs when using a smart card to authenticate on a remote system.

Microsoft also addressed an issue causing some Wi-Fi adapters to fail to connect to some networks. The company said that there was a higher risk of encountering this issue when Wi-Fi networks use the 802.1X network protocol for authentication.

For Windows 10 users, the KB5034122 update includes the same fix for the unexpected shutdown issue on devices using Windows smart card sign-in. Microsoft started rolling out its new Copilot assistant to Windows 10 users last month, and this is still ongoing.

According to a recent report, Microsoft could release a “Moment 5” update for Windows 11 in February. This update should include many features that Microsoft is currently testing with Insiders, including an undocked mode for Copilot and the ability to ink anywhere you can type across the OS.
