Microsoft Brings its Dev Home App to Windows 10

Microsoft Dev Home app

Microsoft’s Dev Home app, which was one of the big developer announcements from Microsoft’s Build conference last year, is now available on Windows 10 following its launch on Windows 11. The app remains in preview and it’s available to download from the Microsoft Store.

Dev Home is an open-source app that works like a dashboard where developers can configure their development environment and monitor their projects. The app lets developers connect their GitHub account and other development tools, configure the Windows Package Manager (winget), and create a Resilient File System (ReFS)-based Dev Drive that will deliver improved performance for development scenarios.

Dev Home can also be used to monitor workflows using various widgets: There are system widgets providing real-time information on memory, network, CPU, and GPU utilization, as well as Dev Home extensions for adding customizable widgets for GitHub and oher services. In the release notes for the latest version 0.9, Microsoft noted that widgets will not persist on the Dev Home dashboard when upgrading a Windows 10 PC to Windows 11.

Even though Windows 10 will reach end of support in October 2025, the OS remains the most popular version of Windows with a 67.42% market share in December, according to Statcounter. That’s why Microsoft can’t completely neglect this userbase, which is estimated to be close to one billion users. And for all Windows 10 PCs that work just fine but aren’t eligible for a Windows 11 upgrade, Microsoft announced last month that there will be an Extended Security Update program for the OS, though pricing details are still unknown.
