Windows 11 is Now The Most Popular Version of the OS According to Statcounter

Windows 11 has finally become the most popular version of the OS, according to the latest data from Statcounter (via Windows Central). The web traffic analysis website now reports a 52% market share for Windows 11 in July 2025, up from 47.98% in June, while Windows 10’s share dropped from 48.76% to 44.59% during the same timeframe.

There was a clear acceleration starting in January when Windows 11 was still at 36.65%, so we’re looking at a 15.35% points gain in just six months. This sudden surge is probably the result of Windows 10 reaching end of support on October 14, 2025, which has been pushing more users to upgrade.

Windows 10 still being used on 44.59% of PCs three months ahead of its end of support date is still problematic. However, Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program for the OS will also be offered to consumers for the first time. And it was announced last month that individuals will be able to get one year of free security updates by either using the Windows Backup app to sync their settings to the cloud or by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.

A new enrollment wizard for the Windows 10 ESU program will start rolling out to Windows 10 users this month. For organizations, however, the Windows 10 ESU program will cost $61 per device for one year, with the cost increasing each year to get up to three years of support. For IT admins, enrollment in the program is now available via the Microsoft Volume Licensing Program.

Windows 11 will celebrate its 4th anniversary in October, which is likely when Microsoft will release the version 25H2 of the OS. The annual update was officially announced last month, and it will share the same servicing branch as the version 24H2 of the OS. This means that new features will also be gradually rolled out to the older version of Windows 11 via enablement packages.
