Microsoft released yesterday a second wave of Windows 11 emergency updates to address an issue causing some apps to become unresponsive when saving files to cloud storage services. This bug was introduced in the January 2026 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11 versions 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2, and it was still present in the emergency updates Microsoft released last week.
“After installing the Windows update released on and after January 13, 2026, some applications became unresponsive or encountered unexpected errors when opening files from or saving files to cloud-based storage, such as OneDrive or Dropbox. In certain Outlook configurations that store PST files on OneDrive, Outlook may hang and fail to reopen unless the process is terminated or the system is restarted. Users may also see missing sent Items or previously downloaded emails being re‑downloaded,” the company explained in the release notes.
If you’re running Windows 11 version 25H2 or 24H2, the KB5078127 patch is the emergency update you should see in Windows Update. The KB5078167 patch is also available for the Enterprise version of Windows 11 version 25H2, and it addresses the same bug plus the sign-in failures during Remote Desktop connections that Microsoft previously fixed on Home and Pro versions of Windows 11 last week. Lastly, the KB5078132 update is also available for the Enterprise and Education versions of Windows 11 version 23H2.
It’s pretty rare to see Microsoft release two waves of emergency patches to fix bugs in a monthly security update, but here we are. Let’s hope Microsoft raises the quality bar for Windows updates throughout the rest of the year.
