The Essentials: A Simple Tool To Make A Better Gif

No matter if you pronounce it with a soft or hard G, the gif image format has made a roaring comeback the past few years. To continue on with my series of The Essentials, in this edition I’ll share the tool that I use to make the gifs I share on Twitter.

There are quite a few tools out there that make screen recording -> gif a simple process but my personal favorite is an app called Screen2Gif. Why? Because it comes with a built-in editor that makes removing frames easy, allowing you to create the perfect silent movie.

There are some advanced features, such as being able to set the number of frames per second and the ability to add text, subtitles, title frames, borders, and watermarks. It’s a lightweight application that can be run quickly with just enough features to make it an essential app.

The app is not perfect, as I have discovered a bug; in a multi-monitor setup, the app will only record on your primary monitor correctly. I’m not sure if this bug exists with 1080P monitors but at 4k, it only correctly records on the monitor Windows identifies as 1.

While not everyone needs, or even wants, to make gifs, the file format is here to stay. So, if you need a utility that makes recording content on your screen easier (and it’s free), check out Screen2gif.

If you are looking for other essential apps, I asked on Twitter what everyone else uses on a daily basis and the list includes some interesting apps that are worth exploring.
