Microsoft Brings Windows Insider Preview Build 17758 to the Fast Ring

Microsoft Postpones Windows 10 Ability to Install Apps on SD

And surprise! This one actually has a new feature that was previously announced and presumed forgotten.

And that is news in its own right: Microsoft has, after all, delivered several Redstone 5 builds in recent weeks that have included absolutely no new features. And the assumption was that any one of them could have been what we’d previously had called a release candidate.

Adding features this late in the game is, of course, not good form. But whatever.

“We’re adding a new capability and making a few changes to Storage Sense’s behavior,” Microsoft’s Dona Sarkar explains. “Storage Sense now has the capability to automatically free up disk space by making older, unused, locally available files be available online-only.”

To be clear, she’s referring to OneDrive Files on Demand files there. And you can learn more about this change in a recent post to the Technet blog.

In reply to Sprtfan:

That looks like a Microsoft logo on what would be the top in portrait. Not sure that HP would put that on the device instead of their own logo.

A Surface RT Mini, repurposed or photoshopped, perhaps. The mythical Andromeda? I am sure there is some interesting hardware roaming around the halls of Microsoft offices.

On a cynical tear. The statement “Storage Sense now has the capability to automatically free up disk space by making older, unused, locally available files be available online-only.” made me think of delivery optimization files for some reason.

That said, as a daily Excel user, I rather detest its help files only being available online. Good thing I kept my Excel 2002 .CHM files and a few really ancient .HLP files from the 1990s so I can look up arcane things locally.

This version is detected by apps as Windows 7. I have reported this to the Feedback Hub.
