Amazon has quietly removed its new AI-powered Video Recaps for select Prime Video shows after some users noticed embarrassing errors in the recap for Fallout’s first season. The second season of the critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic series is set to debut on December 17, so it’s probably not the best time for Amazon’s AI to missummarize one of its best TV shows in years.
Multiple users on Twitter and Reddit (via GamesRadar) noticed that the AI-generated recap mistakenly claims that flashback scenes with Cooper Howard (the ghoul bounty hunter) are set in the 1950s instead of 2077. The video recap also got a key detail of the first season’s final episode wrong, claiming that Cooper gives the lead character Lucy the choice to “die or join him.”
Fallout on Prime added a season 1 recap but don’t bother watching it, it’s AI slop that gets several details wrong like the flashbacks being set in the 1950s and “Cooper offers Lucy a choice in the finale: die, or join him” phrased as if he’d be the one to kill her ? pic.twitter.com/zHLvN988w5

Amazon previously explained that its Video Recaps “use AI to identify a show’s most important plot points, combining them with synchronized voice narration, dialogue snippets, and music to create a visual summary that prepares viewers for the new season.” The AI-generated recaps launched as a beta feature on select Prime Video shows, including Fallout, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Upload, Bosch, and The Rig. However, The Verge reports that Amazon has now pulled them without notice.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Amazon has embarrassed itself with its use of generative AI technology. Earlier this month, the company also quietly removed AI-generated dubs from multiple anime shows after they became the subject of online mockery. The company launched an AI dubbing pilot program on licensed movies and series on Prime Video earlier this year, and it said at the time that it was working with localization professionals to “ensure quality control.” Well, it seems that AI is far from ready to replace the work of professional voice actors.
