Apple is reportedly planning to overhaul Siri to catch up with ChatGPT and other generative AI assistants with more conversational features. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the effort is being called “LLM Siri” internally, and it may be announced next year with a possible launch in Spring 2026.
If Apple pioneered digital assistants with the launch of Siri back in 2011, the company has been caught by surprise by ChatGPT and other generative AI assistants that can answer complex questions without redirecting users to a web search (something Siri often does). Apple already announced a Siri upgrade with the rollout of Apple Intelligence, but the first new feature coming next month with iOS 18.2 is… a ChatGPT integration.
“The revamped Siri will rely on new Apple AI models to interact more like a human and handle tasks in a way that’s closer to ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini,” Gurman reported. “It also will make expanded use of App Intents, which allow for more precise control of third-party apps. And the software will be able to tap into features from Apple Intelligence, such as the ability to write and summarize text.”
In the coming months, Siri on devices that support Apple Intelligence will become aware of users’ personal context and gain the ability to take action in and across apps. According to Gurman, these upcoming Apple Intelligence will be leveraging a first-generation LLM. “The next-generation LLM planned for iOS 19 will be a new, end-to-end system that provides more advanced, ChatGPT-like capabilities,” Gurman said.
According to Gurman, Apple could announce “LLM Siri” alongside iOS 19 and macOS 16 next year, but the public launch may wait until the following year. That would be consistent with the way Apple decided to roll out the first Apple Intelligence features on eligible iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Gurman also reiterated that Apple is still planning to integrate Siri with other third-party chatbots like Google Gemini.
