Apple may soon allow third-party developers to use the large language models (LLMs) behind Apple Intelligence to create new AI features for their apps. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to announce the new initiative during its annual WWDC developer conference, which will kick off on June 9.
“The iPhone maker is working on a software development kit and related frameworks that will let outsiders build AI features based on the large language models that the company uses for Apple Intelligence,” Gurman wrote, citing people with knowledge of the matter. “The bet is that expanding the technology to developers will lead to more compelling uses for it,” the reporter added.
The first set of Apple Intelligence features including Writing Tools, Genmoji, and Image Playground didn’t really manage to impress AI enthusiasts. Other features like AI-generated notification summaries had to be tweaked following multiple reports of inaccurate results.
While third-party developers can already integrate Writing Tools, Genmoji, and Image Playground capabilities into their apps, getting access to Apple’s LLMs could let them create new AI features that run locally. “To start, Apple will open up its smaller models that run on its devices, rather than the more powerful cloud-based AI models that require servers,” Gurman reported.
According to the report, this new SDK and related frameworks should be “one of the highlights” of WWDC 2025, but they won’t be the only AI-focused announcement. Apple is also expected to reveal an AI-powered battery management mode for its devices, a revamped Health app with intelligent features, and a virtual wellness coach. The latter may not be ready until next year, however.
