Mozilla Firefox to Get New AI Feature in 2026, With a “Kill Switch”

Mozilla welcomed a new CEO last week who voiced his ambition to turn Firefox into a “modern AI browser.” That message received an ambivalent reception from the Firefox community, with many users on Reddit and other places voicing their concerns about their browser losing its uniqueness.

Anthony Enzor-Demeo, the new CEO of Mozilla Corporation, said last week that Firefox will “grow from a browser into a broader ecosystem of trusted software. Firefox will remain our anchor. It will evolve into a modern AI browser and support a portfolio of new and trusted software additions,” the exec said.

As you may know, Firefox already includes some AI features: The version 133 of the browser added the ability to access an AI chatbot to use in the Firefox sidebar. Firefox also integrated Perplexity AI as a secondary search option.

In November, Mozilla announced the upcoming launch of an AI Window feature that will let users access their preferred AI chatbots and agents only when they need them. There’s a waitlist to get access to AI Window when it starts shipping next year, and Mozilla said that the feature will be completely opt-in.

To reassure Firefox users still worried about this new AI focus, Mozilla’s new CEO confirmed that an “AI Kill Switch” will be added to the browser early next year. “Rest assured, Firefox will always remain a browser built around user control,” the Mozilla CEO posted on Reddit. “That includes AI. You will have a clear way to turn AI features off. A real kill switch is coming in Q1 of 2026. Choice matters and demonstrating our commitment to choice is how we build and maintain trust.”

This upcoming “AI Kill Switch” may be something other browser vendors would be inspired to copy. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge both attempt to encourage users to adopt Gemini and Copilot, respectively, but many may start to feel that AI features are getting in the way.
