YouTube Returns on Amazon Fire Devices

After more than a year of conflicts between Amazon and Google over their media products, the companies are finally playing well with each other. As Google promised earlier in April, YouTube is making a return on Amazon’s Fire TV devices.

Amazon today announced that the new official YouTube app is now available on Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, and all Fire TV Edition smart TVs. The company plans to expand the YouTube app to more Fire TV devices in the coming months. Google will also be launching new apps for YouTube TV and YouTube Kids later this year. The new app allows you to view videos in 4K HDR @ 60fps on supported devices, and it even includes Alexa voice controls support.

Google is also returning the favour by bringing Amazon’s Prime Video to its own products. Amazon’s Prime Video is launching for the first time on Chromecast and Android TV, allowing Google users to view content from Prime Video on their devices.

Still no Youtube TV on FireTV sadly, given that FireTV stick is the best stick streamer right now… (Roku's video player sucks and buffers badly.)

In reply to jbinaz:

Go into Plex (or anything else like DirecTV Now or similar), and hit 30 second skip to skip forward, watch all of the buffering. On Android TV (or a PC) it's instant and it builds the buffer on the fly on the exact same wired connection that Roku takes forever to buffer.

On Roku, local (1 gb wired) or cloud (250 mbps) has endless buffering delays because it appears to fill the buffer before playing instead of starting immediately like Android TV.

Once you see it and see the alternative you'll hate your Roku from then on. Try skipping say 30 minutes into a show or sporting event. It will take you forever on a Roku versus an Android TV device.

Oh and then there is the lack of bitstream audio like the Nvidia Shield has for Atomos, DTS:X and TrueX etc.

I wonder if Play Movies will show up on Fire TV? But I guess those can be streamed through the YouTube app so it doesn't matter too much.

Prime on chromecast is welcome. I have a Prime subscription but hand't bothered to really use it – I had it for shipping and because it was cheap.

Now I'll at least get a chance to try it out properly – I could technically use it before but the rest of the family has grown used to Chromecast, etc.

I wonder if they'll go as far as allowing "Hey Google, Play Man in the High Castle" and Google works out its on Prime, etc. That works REALLY well for Netflix shows. Pause, jump ahead/back, etc just work. I try to explain to my kids we're living in the future :D
