Amazon Gives Three New Conversation Styles to Alexa+

Amazon is introducing three new conversation styles for its Alexa+ assistant, which became generally available in the US earlier this month. Users can now choose between ‘brief’, ‘sweet’, and ‘chill’ styles, similar to the different styles and tones OpenAI made available in ChatGPT.

The three distinct styles won’t change Alexa’s capabilities; this is just about choosing “a communication style that fits your preference,” Amazon said today. The ‘brief’ style is designed to offer “shorter, more direct responses” with no small talk. The ‘chill style will make interactions feel “conversational and breezy,” while the ‘sweet’ style will respond “with genuine warmth and enthusiasm.”

To create its three new personality styles, Amazon created a system with five interconnected variables: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humor. The new personality styles can also be paired with the different voices available with Alexa+.

“Each personality style represents a carefully calibrated combination across all five dimensions, and the difference is in the delivery. The same answer to “What’s the weather?” might be brief and efficient in one style or delivered with a playful twist in another,” Amazon explained today.

To try the new personality styles for Alexa+, you can either say “Alexa, change your personality style” to your Echo device or select one in the Alexa mobile app. Alexa+ is currently free for Prime subscribers, or you can pay Amazon $19.99/month to get access to the next-gen assistant.
