Twitter/X Launches Audio and Video Calls on Android

X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, has started rolling out support for audio and video calls on Android. Enrique Barragan, the Tech lead for Direct Messages and Communities products at X announced the new feature in a post yesterday (via The Verge).
Audio and video calls on X became first available on iOS back in October. Android users should get access to them after installing an the latest app update, but there’s a catch.

By default, all users on X can receive calls from accounts they follow or have in their address book. However, only Premium subscribers can initiate audio and video calls, but only they previously sent at least one direct message to the person they want to call.
All X users can also control who can call them from Direct Message settings. There are currently three different options: People you follow, people in your address book, and Verified users with a Premium subscription. You can learn more about audio and video calls on X on this support page.
While these new calling features probably aren’t going to turn X into a WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger competitor, Elon Musk still plans to turn X into an “everything app.” The company launched its Grok AI chatbot last year, and it also revealed earlier this month that it’s currently working on a new peer-to-peer payment system.
