X/Twitter Adds Support for Passkeys for US-Based iOS Users

X/Twitter announced yesterday that users in the US can now use passkeys as a new secure way to log into the iOS app. Passkeys are a new passwordless authentication method built on the WebAuthn technology, and they’re now gaining momentum after being embraced by Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and other tech companies.

After enabling a passkey in the X app for iOS, users will be able to log in to their account by choosing the passkey option instead of entering their password. Passkeys can also automatically sync across iOS devices using Apple’s iCloud Keychain.

To create a passkey, iOS users will need to open the X app and then go to Settings and privacy > Security and account access > Security > Additional password protection. Clicking the Passkey option will require entering the account password when prompted, and then a passkey will be automatically generated.

Once enrolled, users will be able to sign in to their X account using their passkey, which works with Face ID and Touch ID. Passkeys can also be deleted at any time in the app’s settings.

For now, X users can’t sign-up to the service with a passkey rather than a password, but this is something the company is already working on. However, there’s no ETA yet on when passkeys support is coming to Android and other markets than the US.
