X Teases New TV App

X TV app

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has teased the upcoming launch of a new TV app on “most smart TVs.” Twitter already had apps for tvOS and Android, and those are still available as of this writing, but the new X TV app may be quite different.

It’s probably not a coincidence that the short video teaser for this upcoming X TV app shows a Vladimir Putin interview with American conservative journalist Tucker Carlson, as well as a liftoff clip from SpaceX, a company also owned by Elon Musk. X’s new TV ambitions also reflects how the company has been trying to convince users to publish long-form content and longer videos on the platform… which are two things that currently require an X Premium subscription.

“From the small screen to the big screen X is changing everything,” said Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X today. “Soon we’ll bring real-time, engaging content to your smart TVs with the X TV App. This will be your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.”

The X CEO detailed what to expect from the upcoming TV app, including a trending video algorithm, AI-powered topics, and a cross-device experience with casting support from mobile devices. The app will also have an enhanced video search engine to help users find content faster.

In a note sent to the company’s corporate partners viewed by The Hollywood Reporter, the company also said that the X TV app won’t have any ads at launch, though they should be coming eventually. “We’re focusing on launching this new feature for consumers first, but we do plan to monetize it, and will discuss different forms of partnerships — and that may include ads,” the note said.
