X Now Uses Public Posts to Train its Grok AI, But You Can Opt Out

X Grok AI

xAI, Elon Musk’s AI startup is now using X public posts to train its Grok chatbot. Grok doesn’t get the same level of attention as ChatGPT and other chatbots because it’s locked behind an X Premium subscription, but the good news is that X users can opt out of having their posts and interactions used for AI training.

“All X users have the ability to control whether their public posts can be used to train Grok, the AI search assistant. This option is in addition to your existing controls over whether your interactions, inputs, and results related to Grok can be utilized,” the company said today.

In a support page about its Grok chatbot, X explains that Grok was “pre-trained by xAI on a variety of text data from publicly available sources from the Internet up to Q3 2023 and data sets reviewed and curated by AI Tutors who are human reviewers.” The same support page explicitly says that Grok “has not been pre-trained on X data (including public X posts).” However, public data from X users is now being used for training and fine-tuning purposes.

In practice, X may utilize your posts as well as your user interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to improve its chatbot, unless you opt out. The Grok support page says that this data is being used to “improve Grok’s ability to provide accurate, relevant, and engaging responses”, and “ensure Grok remains politically unbiased and provides balanced answers.”

Again, Grok is a paid chatbot, so unless you’re paying for X Premium, you have all the reasons to block the chatbot from using your data. The option to protect your posts from AI training is available in Settings > Privacy and safety > Grok. This setting is currently only available on the web, but it’s coming soon to the X mobile apps. If your X account is private, the company also won’t be using your posts to improve Grok.
