Microsoft Authenticator App Will Soon Lose its Password Management and Autofill Features

Microsoft Authenticator

The Microsoft Authenticator mobile app is about to lose its password autofill feature as Microsoft prepares to streamline its password management offerings to the benefit of its Edge browser. Autofill in Microsoft Authenticator will be discontinued from July 2025, but the app won’t be going away and will continue to support multifactor authentication and passkeys.

“Autofill in Microsoft Authenticator has been a way to securely store and autofill passwords on apps and websites you visit on your phone. Microsoft is streamlining autofill so you can use saved passwords easily across devices,” the company explained on a support page spotted by Bleeping Computer.

Starting in June 2025, it will no longer be possible to save new passwords in the Microsoft Authenticator app. In July, the app’s password autofill feature will be discontinued, and any payment information stored in Authenticator will also be deleted from users’ devices. Lastly, saved passwords will be removed from the app in August, and any generated passwords that were not saved will also be deleted.

After August 1, 2025, all passwords saved in Microsoft Authenticator will remain available in Microsoft Edge, which can be easily configured as the default autofill provider on iOS and Android. However, users who prefer to switch to a different password manager are invited to export their passwords from the app before August 1.

As I mentioned earlier, Microsoft Authenticator will continue to support multi-factor authentication and passkeys, so it’s not about to become completely useless. In its support document, Microsoft also emphasized that users who created passkeys for their Microsoft account using Microsoft Authenticator will need to keep the app as their passkey provider, as disabling it will also disable these passkeys.
