Not possible to cancel Skype Number – MS made the "perfect" subscription?

I noticed there was no cancel button to deactivate my Skype Number subscription. That’s kind of weird. And I’m not the first to encounter this problem. There are at least two Microsoft support threads with annoyed users. I tried to do it from the Skype application too, but it redirects to the same Skype page without a cancel button. The cancel button was there before, but now it’s gone. I think this is a pretty remarkable mistake that hasn’t been fixed since 2017. If someone has info about this please comment.

Sometimes I think Microsoft is just trolling users, because the bug was reported almost two years ago.

Practical: if you want to stop automatic charges against a credit/debit card, ask your card issuer for a new number because you believe someone has misused your number. That may take a week or two, but charges would cease. Problem is you may have lots of such automatic charges.

Longer term, if you live in a state with an active consumer protection agency, complain to them. When states start to investigate difficulties in unsubscribing and start mentioning fines in 5 or 6 figures, that begins to get a company's attention.

In reply to hrlngrv:

The Skype Number renewal is set to use "Skype Credit". I have removed my VISA card from Skype. I don't think I have enough Skype Credit to pay for the renewal so I don't think the payment will go through.

Thank you for reminding me about skype number 🙂 Had forgotten about one and have to say that cancellation is easy but finding the button is a bit complicated. You have to go Skype -> settings -> account & profile -> your account -> in the web browser click on Skype Number and somewhere on that page it has the cancellation link. That is ideal case. However, the logic of each button on the skype account & profile page is somewhat magic. Sometimes it drops into "generic" web page, sometimes it keeps you logged in, other times it logs out and worst of all these pages are inconsistent. It is far from ideal subscription as you state but clearly the design of the app and web pages was done by the teams that do not talk to each other much. That design makes simple things complex for no reason.

In reply to illuminated:

There is no cancel button.

Here is what I believe. There is a cancel button for some users. I had a cancel button a year ago. I clicked it and I was offered to renew another year at reduced cost (30% off). I accepted that offer.

I did not check, but I believe the cancel button disappeared after I accepted that offer. That is weird, because I accepted to pay for another year. I did not accept a lifelong subscription. Skype Number has always been a service you pay for in advance, one year at a time. You could cancel at any time and it would take effect when your prepaid year is over.

Now both the cancel button and the price are gone. So I don't know how much they intend to charge. I have removed my VISA card so worst case scenario I lose my Skype Credit.
