How to remove Widgets – Win11

Hi,

If you are like me and hate the widgets in Win 11, then you probably disabled them i the taskbar settings. But did you notice that that although the icon is disabled the widgets is still running? and you can still swipe in from the left to open the dumpster fire of spam news?

Not only that at idle the widgets application is one of the highest consumers of memory at idle (2nd highest on my system).

So to kill it, open a powershell with admin permissions and use:

Get-AppxPackage MicrosoftWindows.Client.WebExperience | Remove-AppxPackage

So far it has gone and no other issues. It could be reinstalled by future updates so I will keep checking.

If it’s just the news you don’t like just hide that one. I could see third-party widgets that are useful.

It’s the fact that it is a vehicle for future advertising. It needs purging at Windows 11 installation IMO.

Would you begrudge MSFT doing what all the MSFT fanboys complain Google does?

There are several places in Windows for ads. 10 or 11 it doesn’t matter. Why do you think they can let the developers put apps in the store for free and use their own third-party payment system to make money for the app developer?

You want ads? Fine. I don’t. That’s why I use Linux mainly and an Adblocker in a browser.
