Sony is making its PlayStation Portal accessory more useful today with the addition of PlayStation Plus cloud gaming. The new cloud streaming feature is launching in beta today, and it’s currently limited to select PlayStation 5 games in the PlayStation Plus library.
Until now, the PlayStation Portal only worked as a remote player for streaming games installed on a PlayStation 5 console over a home Wi-Fi. While it can still do that, the device is now capable of connecting directly to Sony’s cloud gaming servers to stream over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus library, including Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
To access the new cloud streaming feature, PlayStation Portal owners will need to install the latest PlayStation Portal system software and enable the new cloud streaming beta from Settings. The feature requires an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership ($17.99/month) and a fast Internet connection (13 Mbps down minimum to stream at 1080p).
“As we are in the beginning stages of publicly testing cloud streaming on PS Portal, some features will not be available, such as Game Trials, streaming games purchased on PS Store, system features such as Party voice chat and game invites for select games, Create button, 3D audio, and in-game commerce. Additionally, the streaming games playable on PS Portal are limited to PS5 games, and PS4 games/PS3 games are not supported,” Sony explained today.
As of today, PlayStation Plus cloud gaming is only available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PCs via the PlayStation Plus app. Unlike Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus cloud gaming is not available on the web or mobile devices. Microsoft’s cloud gaming service is currently more ubiquitous, and starting today, the company is finally letting Xbox Cloud Gaming users stream select Xbox games they own that aren’t in the Game Pass library.
