Mark Zuckerberg Says Meta’s Quest 3 Headsets Beat the Apple Vision Pro

Mark Zuckerberg Meta Quest

In a surprising exercise of benchmarking and competition analysis, Meta CEO Mark has publicly claimed that Meta’s Quest 3 mixed reality headsets are better than the just-released Apple Vision Pro. Of course, Zuckerberg was never going to say the contrary, but the fact that the exec took the time to record a video to list out several areas where the Quest 3 delivers a better experience than the competition is quite something.

To prove Zuckerberg’s points, the exec’s short Instagram video was apparently shot with the Meta Quest 3’ video passthrough feature. And it kicks off with some pretty bold statements.

“Before this, I expected that Quest would be the better value for most people since it’s really good, it’s seven times less expensive. After using it, I don’t just think that Quest is the better value, I think Quest is the better product, period,” Zuckerberg said.

The CEO of Meta also added that “overall, Quest is better for the vast majority of things that people use mixed reality for.” He then detailed several key areas where the Quest 3 beats Apple’s Vision Pro:

Design: The Quest 3 weighs 120 grams less than the Vision Pro, and it doesn’t have a wired battery you need to carry with you.

Image quality: Even though Zuckerberg acknowledged that the Vision Pro comes with better displays, the exec still claimed that the Quest 3 provides a crisper and brighter image with a wider field of view and no motion blur when you’re moving around.

Controls: Zuckerberg emphasized that the Quest 3 supports precision controllers in addition to hand tracking, and said that even though the Vision Pro’s eye-tracking technology is nice, it’s not perfect for everything.

Content: This is an obvious one since the Vision Pro is brand new, but Meta Quest headsets currently have more apps, and Zuckerberg even mentioned the availability of Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Price: The Meta Quest 3 starts at $549.99, compared to $3,499 for the Apple Vision Pro.

Zuckerberg concluded his video by drawing a comparison with the PC market when open platforms like Windows won. If Zuckerberg acknowledged that Apple’s “closed” approach on mobile won, the exec believed that the openness of the Android-based Quest system software would prevail. “In this next generation, Meta is going to be the open model, and I really want to make sure that the open model wins out again, Zuckerberg said.

Even though Zuckerberg uses some solid arguments, the exec likely can’t ignore the immense recognition and almost irrational brand loyalty Apple products inspire today. And that’s why you may have already seen many videos of people using the headset in public spaces since the Apple Vision Pro headset launched earlier this month. You’re likely not going to see people do that with Meta Quest 3 headsets, however, the collection of smart glasses Meta created in partnership with Ray-Ban seem to be getting some traction.
