HoloLens 2 to Ship in September

A Microsoft executive said that HoloLens 2, the firm’s next-generation Augmented Reality (AR) headset, will ship next month.

Reuters reports that Microsoft executive vice president Harry Shum said on Thursday that the software giant will start shipping HoloLens 2 to customers in September. The comment came during a speech at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai.

And … that’s pretty much the entire story. We don’t have an exact date, or any other additional information.

As a bit of background, Microsoft unveiled HoloLens 2 at MWC 2019 in February. The headset is a significant improvement over the original design, based on my hands-on experiences with both. In May, Microsoft launched pre-orders for the $3500 HoloLens Development Edition; that’s the same price as the shipping version for businesses. There will also be a $99 per month payment plan.

Why have an event in October when your most exciting product ships in September? That makes no sense. No one else has anything like this. Shouldn’t they be trumpeting this, even if only for businesses, not a bunch of laptops that basically look and work like everyone else’s?

I wish they would make a version of this with plastic instead of carbon fiber so that they could maybe get the price down into Oculus / HTC territory. Playing Minecraft Earth on it would be awesome!

Well it didn't ship in September. It is not shipping in October. Does anyone have any idea on when it is shipping? I have one on pre-order and have heard nothing.
