Report: Apple Made 8 of the Top 10 Best-Selling Smartphones in 2022

There were 8 eight different iPhone models among the top 10 best-selling smartphones in 2022, according to new data from Counterpoint Research. The iPhone 13 topped the list and was the best-selling smartphone of 2022, and other than iPhones, only two entry-level Samsung Galaxy phones made it to the top ten.

“Apple’s iPhone 13 was the best-selling smartphone of 2022, contributing 28% of iPhone sales,” the market research company explained, adding that the iPhone 13 sold twice as many units as the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is the #2 best selling smartphone of last year. The more recent iPhone 14 Pro Max ended up in third position, beating the more affordable iPhone 14 (7th) and iPhone 14 Pro (8th).

“For the first time, a Pro Max variant of an iPhone series drove more volume than its Pro and base models in 2022,” the company emphasized. “Major advancements in the iPhone 14 Pro series, such as dynamic island and faster processor, make it more attractive, as the base model is almost identical to the previous year’s model.”

It’s true that last year’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus didn’t bring anything really new to the table. The two phones use the same A15 Bionic chip previously seen in the iPhone 13, and their OLED displays also didn’t add support for Apple’s Promotion high-refresh rate technology. The bigger iPhone 14 Plus also failed to make it to the top 10 best-selling smartphones last year.

Apple has just announced a new yellow color for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, which is now available in six different colors. However, it’s not a really great time to buy an iPhone 14 as the iPhone 15 is expected to feature a USB-C port and adopt the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island feature.

Despite Apple selling 8 of the top 10 best-selling smartphones in 2022, the company still ended up as the second biggest smartphone manufacturer behind Samsung last year, according to Counterpoint Research. Chinese brand Xiaomi has been in the third position since 2020, beating the other Chinese brands Oppo, Vivo, and Huawei.
