Sonos Announces Move 2 Portable Speaker

Sonos Move 2

The Sonos Move 2 improves on its predecessor with stereo sound, double the battery life, new controls, and a new color. It’s available for preorder now at $449, and it will start shipping September 20.

“Since its 2019 launch, Move continues to be the best-selling speaker in its category thanks to its design, versatility, and powerful sound,” Sonos CEO Patrick Spence says. “We strive to create sound experiences that inspire deeper connections no matter who we’re with or where we are. Move 2 advances our commitment to immersive listening by bringing stereo sound to our most popular portable, featuring the same next-gen acoustics and design we debuted with the Era family.”

We own a first-generation Sonos Move and like it quite a bit because it sounds incredible and can move between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes. But the Move 2 is even better, and it improves on the one thing I don’t like about its predecessor by separating the power brick from the wireless charging base and its USB-C cable. (This isn’t enough to get me to upgrade, of course.)

Here’s what’s new.

Price. The Move 2 is $449, compared to $399 for the Move, which is still available.

Colors. In addition to white and black, the Move 2 is available in a new olive color.

Battery. Where the Move is rated at 11 hours of battery, the Move 2 can go for 24 hours. And its battery is user-replaceable, a nice sustainability upgrade.

Sound. Where the original Move has 2 class-D digital amplifiers and a single tweeter, the Move 2 has 3 class-D digital amplifiers and two angled tweeters, enabling stereo output from a single speaker. Move 2 also supports concurrent Bluetooth streaming to a stereo pair, which the original does not.

Line-in. In keeping with Sonos’ recent speakers, the Move 2 supports line-in via a USB-C adapter whereas the original did not.

Controls. While both speakers support to-mounted touch controls, the Move 2 adopts the new control system with the capacitive volume slider that debuted with the Era 100 and 300 smart speakers.

Size/weight. The two speakers weigh the same 6.61 pounds and look almost identical, but they are slightly different in size, with the Move 2 being noticeably less deep (5 inches vs. 6.3 inches). As a result, the wireless charging bases are different (and look different).

Sustainability. In addition to its removable battery, the Move 2 consumes 40 percent less energy while idle, uses recycled plastics, and comes in curbside recyclable packaging with sustainably sourced material and zero virgin plastic.
