Books and Bundles

It took almost two months, but I finally finished a major book-wide rewrite of the Windows 11 Field Guide. That said, “finished” is the wrong word since this book is a living thing that will evolve over the next few months before I transition to the next edition.

Case in point. Since posting that last update, I added two chapters to the book, Share, which expands on the previous Nearby sharing chapter, and Copilot+ PC: Click to Do and Recall, which is new. And on the flight back from Las Vegas, I did a consistency pass on all the “Learn more”/”More info” blurbs and a lot of the cross-links in the book, and that literally touched every chapter file in the book.

But there’s so much more I want to do with this book, including the long-planned style/layout changes that will have to wait until the next edition. But there are some short-term updates that I think will help elevate this and my other books a bit. And then there are other books I intend to write and other existing books I would like to update.

So I’ll start there.

I’m going to write the Markdown book. Back in April, I hinted that I might write a book about Markdown this year. Since then, I’ve decided to go ahead and write it. The book will be short and, if possible free to very inexpensive since it’s not clear the world needs another Markdown book. But I want to cover why writers should adopt Markdown and not just how it works. It may be called Markdown: A Field Guide for Writers or Markdown for Writers: A Field Guide, and I will publish each chapter as individual articles on this site as well.

I’m going to update De-Enshittify Windows 11 to a new edition. The second edition of this book will incorporate my recent work minimizing the Microsoft, so to speak, and add some content that addresses recent developments with Windows 11. I’m hoping this won’t be a total rewrite.

I will make some Windows 11 book bundles. I keep thinking about packaging my books into logical bundles (which Leanpub supports) so that people can buy two or more of them together and pay less. This won’t impact Premium members, as they get my books for free as part of that membership. But I’m thinking that a few logical bundles will make sense and I’m hoping to put this together soon:

• Windows 11 Field Guide + De-Enshittify Windows 11
• Windows 11 Field Guide + De-Enshittify Windows 11 + Windows Everywhere

Coming soon: Windows 11 Field Guide 2027 Edition. The current book is the Windows 11 Field Guide 2026 Edition, and I will move to a 2027 Edition when Microsoft delivers Windows 11 version 26H2 in October. This will be a new book in the sense that it will be a new purchase (again, for those who aren’t Premium members), but also an update to the existing edition, and one that will be updated going forward until a year later. There will be the style changes I keep mentioning, though that may evolve too. But the goal here is to update the book monthly to address whatever new features arrive each Patch Tuesday and keep it as up-to-date as possible so I don’t go through the two-month process I just completed ever again.

Coming soon to Eternal Spring: Our Guide to Mexico City. This is probably of less interest to most, but in addition to the normal updates, my wife and I are working on a big new chapter that will concisely cover several locations in Mexico outside of Mexico City that we think make for good side trips. Places like Oaxaca, Puebla, San Miguel de Allende, and so on. This should be available by September or October, though we may just phase them in one location at a time. I had hoped to finish this sooner.
