Tips and picks

Tip of the week: Games with Gold is awesome this month

And it’s already available: You can get Battlefield 1 and Assassin’s Creed (!) a day early too!

Plus: There are now over 1000 indie games available from ID@Xbox

Plus: Red Dead Redemption 2 sale on Xbox consoles

App pick of the week: Skype for Web (Preview)

Skype for Web (Preview) is Skype without the app. Or something. thanks to Rick (

@rpodric) on Twitter.

Enterprise pick of the week: Olympia v2

Microsoft is adding some new features to its “Olympia” Windows Insider testing program for business users

Codename pick of the week: Vanadium and Vibranium

Microsoft is shifting its codename scheme yet again and now matching Azure in its use of chemical elements as codenames. Vanadium is up after 19H1. Then Vibranium (not Chromium), for rather obvious reasons.

Beer pick of the week: Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

I don’t drink pumpkin beers often, but when I do, I try to find ones that don’t taste like a slice of pumpkin pie. Dogfish Head’s Punkin Ale is a decent pumpkin beer. You get the spices, but not the sweetness (despite inclusion of brown sugar).

I think Linux initially got a toehold because it was a reasonable implementation of an OS that a lot of companies had experience with e.g. Unix (with a small 'u') and it had no upfront cost or per license fee (not to say it's totally free in a practical sense). I honestly doubt that it would have made much difference whether it was open source or not as long as it was cost-free.

I doubt that very many companies using Linux have done much looking at the source code, they just want to use it as a tool.
