As he did last year, Microsoft CMO Chris Capossela has graciously donated some great hardware and software on Windows Weekly. And as we did last year, we’re going to give it all away here on Thurrott.com.
The giveaways are:
Sign up for our new free newsletter to get three time-saving tips each Friday — and get free copies of Paul Thurrott's Windows 11 and Windows 10 Field Guides (normally $9.99) as a special welcome gift!
"*" indicates required fields
We’ll do the giveaways in three batches—Game Pass, Office 365, and then the hardware—via three separate posts over the next week or so. Because we’re paying the shipping costs, the hardware will be U.S. and Canada only, sorry.
You can indicate your interest in any of these giveaways by commenting on each of the posts to come. Do not comment here to indicate you’re interested in any of these items. There will be separate posts for the Game Pass Ultimate codes, the Office 365 codes, the hardware, respectively. (To comment, you will need a site account, which is free.) And then I’ll close each post after 24 hours and choose the winners at random the next day.
The first post, for the Game Pass Ultimate product keys, will go live on Friday morning, December 20, 2019. Stay tuned, and thanks! —Paul

Premium Member
Paul, I think you meant to say December 20, 2019 at the end. And thanks for doing this! ?

As much as I wanted to get my hands on those Surface "beauties", as a brazilian, I completely understand the limitations of sending hardware overseas. Anyway, great content + great giveaways. Do not regret being a premium subscriber since the begining.

Premium Member
Paul, what would you all think about limiting some of these give-away type of events to Premium members?

docpaul

In reply to Chris_Kez:

Or perhaps, at least, a portion of the prizes available to premium members only.

In reply to Chris_Kez:

I don't know the ins and outs of it, but isn't it a legal requirement for giveaways that you can't require a purchase to be entered into a giveaway or something like that?

Paul Thurrott
Premium Member
In reply to Chris_Kez:

So, two things to that.

First, this was done for Windows Weekly, not Thurrott.com or Premium. So on that level, I couldn't really do that.

Second, as someone else pointed out, and as coworkers here seem to believe, there is this idea that you can't predicate a giveaway on a purchase because of something related to gambling. I am positive that's not literally true, in part because we could simply limit it to existing Premium customers, thus none would have spent money in order to get this chance. But whatever, I've been outvoted at work on that in the past. Also, see point number one. :)

Thanks for understanding,

Paul

I watch or listen to Window's Weekly every week, but I think the yearly show that Chris is on is my favorite every year. I was so glad he talked about Microsoft on multiple platforms as one of his highlights. As someone who uses multiple platforms and enjoys Microsoft software the focus that they are putting on that is a big deal.

Thanks again!!

Premium Member
It was interesting to hear Chris talk about Google and Microsoft being "partners" in developing products like the Surface Duo. I switched from Android to an iPhone a few years ago because everyone else in my family was using an iPhone and it just makes things simpler when it comes to messaging and Find My etc. But the Your Phone app is getting better and I sit in front of a Windows PC most of the day (or a Chromebook like I am using right now) and it would be great to have better integration between my phone and my computer. That will likely never happen with an iPhone.

I was at Costco last weekend and almost bought a Note 10 on sale for $500 (the Note 10+ was arguably a better deal at $630, but I like the size of my iPhone X and I am not sure I want anything as big as the Note 10+). Any thoughts on how far down this path the partnership between Microsoft and Google (Android) will go? Has the integration between Android and Windows been useful to others who sit in front of a PC much of the day?

darrellprichard

In reply to sgbassett:

I too am having to watch with envy from the sidelines as Android is getting all the Your Phone love. I'm totally in the iOS ecosystem now and even if I wanted to (which I don't), moving to Android is a non-starter.

Was great video on GITHUB and how MS is working toward open sharing. The old MS was so closed and hard to get real answers for us smaller developers. Not a gamer so I would pass on Game Pass but other would be nice. I watch often and have followed you from X to Y over the years…have a book around here somewhere from old….yes I read, LOL!

Thank you for at least being super clear that hardware prizes can't be won outside North America, you've explained and that's understable on shipping costs. Thank you again for however for ensuring software/codes prizes will be international :D

Premium Member
A couple of questions:

Can you "enter" all of the three giveaways (with separate posts)?

If you win an earlier one (i.e., a Game Pass Ultimate subscription) are you precluded from winning another (i.e., a Surface Pro 7)?

Thanks

Maybe if you draw a hardware winner from outside of north america, they can make the choice whether they would want to pay the shipping cost? But still happy to win one of the license keys.

Premium Member
Wow, just wow. Many thanks to Paul, Chris (MS) and the whole Windows Weekly team (and Brad). I enjoy my daily dose of Thrrott.com whilst doing my Dev job in the UK and now I have an office in the US I guess I can legitimately enter the festive giveaway too !!! Bonus 🙂

But back to serious matters. Anytime you put out opinions in the public domain there will always be haters. My favourite expression is that "People tend to criticise things they don't understand" . I think the way you guys handle this and that the quality of the writing on this site is not degraded in any way in order to compensate for such haters is a testament to the professionalism. Best wishes to you all and your families for a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year.

It would be great to win something, so please consider this a comment though I'm not sure if this is the correct place to do so given the "Do not comment here to indicate you're interested in any of these items." above. Since I don't see any other place at which to comment, this is a 'better safe than sorry' approach.

Premium Member
Nice one Paul well done to yourself and Chris Caposella from Microsoft for this nice giveaway to readers. I am located in Australia and completely understand this offer not being made available outside the US & Canada as the shipping costs would be significant. Best wishes to all who enter as you will be getting a very nice PCgift. Merry Xmas & a happy new year 2020 to all at thurrott.com.

I'm so confused. I heard about the giveaway when I listened to the archived version of Windows Weekly this weekend (on Sunday). I signed up for the free site account (and, after seeing all of the premium content references, I'm thinking of a premium membership). But I stand confused as to when this starts and where the posts are going to be for me to comment and enter… The Game Pass was supposed to be live on Friday, Dec. 20 and end after 24 hours? Is this the post and/or is the opportunity already gone? Any guidance would be appreciated. Side note: I got side-tracked by one post from my search of Windows Weekly Giveaway that said (Updated), but that was from a year ago… Nevertheless, if this is where I'm supposed to indicate interest, consider me interested.
