Windows Insiders on the Canary and Dev Channels can now start testing a new AI-powered Cocreator feature in Paint. Cocreator leverages OpenAI’s DALL-E technology to let Paint users create artworks from a simple text prompt.
When Insiders describe what they want to create in Paint, Cocreator will also let them choose between different art styles and see three variations of an AI-generated artwork before creating it for real.

Microsoft said that it has implemented safeguards to prevent Cocreator from creating offensive or inappropriate content. As you probably know, these AI-powered are resource intensive and there’s currently a credit system that limits how many artworks you can create.
Paint Cocreator is launching in preview today for English users in the US, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Australia, and Canada. However, Insiders in the Dev and Canary channels will need to wait for an email invite to get early access to it.
“We will be rolling out access slowly at first, so when you get the update, you must first join the waitlist by signing in with your Microsoft account and clicking on the new Cocreator button in the toolbar,” the Windows Insider team said today.
With the Windows 11 Fall Update that’s now available in preview, Microsoft is also adding support for layers and transparency in Paint. After Microsoft tried to kill Paint and replace it with Paint 3D many years ago, who would have imagined that the legacy desktop app would enjoy such a renaissance?
