YouTube Makes Automatic Dubbing Available For Information Channels

YouTube is making automatic dubbing available for “hundreds of thousands of channels” focusing on knowledge and information content. The feature leverages the work from the Google Deepmind and Translate teams to dub videos into other languages.

As of today, automatic dubbing is only available for information-focused channels already enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program. After uploading their videos, eligible content creators will see the automatic dubbing option in YouTube Studio. English videos will be dubbed into French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish, while videos in any of these other languages will be dubbed into English.

Content creators can always review the dubs before publishing their videos, and they can also unpublish and delete dubs they don’t like at any time. For viewers, the track selector will let them choose between the original language or auto-dubbed tracks, and the YouTube video description will also indicate if audio tracks for some languages were automatically generated.

“It’s important to remember that this technology is still pretty new, and it won’t always be perfect. We’re working hard to make it as accurate as possible, but there might be times when the translation isn’t quite right or the dubbed voice doesn’t accurately represent the original speaker, the YouTube team explained. The company is planning to expand automatic dubbing to other types of videos soon.
