Apple has reportedly paused the development of a lighter and cheaper Vision Pro headset to prioritize its work on smart glasses. A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reveals that Apple wants to speed up its answer to the popular glasses from Meta, and the Vision Pro maker is currently aiming to release the first model in 2027 in place of an overhauled Vision Pro headset.
Gurman believes that Apple’s first smart glasses could be announced as soon as next year, but they will require an iPhone and lack a built-in display, like the one on the new Meta Ray-Ban Display. “The Apple version had been planned for 2028, but the company is now looking to accelerate development,” sources told Gurman.
“The Apple glasses are expected to come in a variety of styles and run a new chip. They’ll include speakers for music playback, cameras for media recording, and voice-control features that will work with a connected phone. Apple has also been exploring a suite of health-tracking capabilities for the device,” Gurman reported.
While Apple’s first glasses will arrive years after the Ray-Ban Meta models, it’s not the end of the road for the $3,499 Vision Pro. A new version of the headset with a faster chip is expected to be released later this year, along with new HomePod Mini, iPad Pro, and Apple TV models.
